What is Truth?

 What is truth? Truth is not just a philosophical question that can be determined by reason.  Truth is more reality driven than a philosophical explanation.  For most people truth is entertainment driven and self gratification obsessed.  Truth becomes a blend of pop psychology, pop philosophy, and pop theology. Truth for most people depends on their circumstance and their desires at the moment of decision.  Biblical truth is totally different than man’s explanation.  Biblically truth resides in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  Jesus is the way, the truth and the life (Jh 14:6).   This truth found in Jesus is not an external truth of philosophy but an internal truth of the Spirit.  The truth of God is given to the believer though the Holy Spirit (Jh 16:132).  Truth then becomes the very essence of God himself.  Because God is creator of all living things truth can be found from that which has been made (Rm 1:20).  Truth can be found in scripture because all scripture is God breathed (2 Tim 3:16).  Truth can be found in the law of God because Jesus has fulfilled law.  The law of God is now written upon our hearts.

You know when you are in the presence of truth when you are humbled by it.  Truth humbles you!  It makes you aware of falsehood and sin in your life.  Truth gets you honest with yourself.  Truth speaks correction and grace.  This truth draws you to confession and repentance. You are humbled by the sovereignty of God speaking truth to you.  When you find the truth it humbles you because you are in the presence of an all mighty God.

Not only does the truth make you humble it also calls you to greater obedience.    When you find the truth you have to respond one way or another rather you will follow him in obedience or not.  The truth of man keeps changing and modifying itself according to the social and political agenda of the day.  But God’s truth never changes. It calls you and challenges you to a higher walk of righteousness.  The law of God is living in you. It calls you to take responsibility for your walk of faith.

Jesus said “If you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (Jh 8:31)” God’s truth in you is freeing.  You are set free from the guilt of sin. You are set free from the bondage of man.  You are set free from Satan’s control.  You are free to be whole.  You are free to be all God has created you to be.  Truth sets you free.

Good and upright is the LORD;

therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.

 He guides the humble in what is right

and teaches them his way.

All the ways of the LORD are loving and faithful

for those who keep the demands of his covenant.

Ps 25:8-10  NIV
